The Ins & Outs of Freight Rates

Freight rates are somewhat complicated to the person who doesn’t know how they are calculated. That’s why it is important to understand the ins and outs of freight rates. If you can understand how these rates are calculated, you will have a much better handle on getting the best rate.

The Ins & Outs of Freight Rates

Weight: The first thing that goes into calculating a freight rate is the weight of the item being shipped. How much something weighs is probably the most important factor when it comes to shipping something. It is not the only factor, but it is the main consideration. Generally, companies have charts that determine how much something will cost to ship depending upon the weight.

Density: However, density also factors into how much a rate is. Most people do not think about the density much, because generally it is not calculated. However, if you have a great deal of weight in a very small package, it can affect what kind of rate you get. Usually, this is not factor into the final shipping price unless the density is a major problem.

Classification: The classification of something being shipped may factor into it. Some items require special handling which may make it more inconvenient for the shipping company. For example, if something is fragile, it may need special handling which requires it to be separated from other items and treated with more caution.

Distance: Obviously, the last factor is how far the item is going. The distance of the item that is being shipped is usually combined with the weight. While density and classification may not make as much of a difference with most shipped items, weight and distance are always factored into the price. The longer the distance the object has to go, the more it is going to cost to ship.
