Transportation Modes Most Affected by Capacity Crunch

Capacity crunch is something that can affect industries throughout the world. While all types of transportation can feel the effect of a capacity crunch, it is typically ground transit that will suffer the biggest effects. This includes full truckload, less than truckloads, and parcel shipping.

What Transportation Modes Are Most Affected by Capacity Crunch?

Shippers throughout the United States rely on all of these modes of transportation. Here is how a capacity crunch can affect each of them.

Full Truckload

Full truckload transportation feels the pressure from a capacity crunch because of the predisposition for regulatory reform. Since full truckload shipments often require multiple days of driving, all of these drivers are mandated to stay within a compliance deadline. The rules for how long a driver can be on a road greatly affects these types of truckloads.

Less than Loads and Parcel Delivery

When FT availability goes down during a capacity crunch a shipper will then need to decide between parcel shipping or LTL shipping. While LTL shipping seems more cost effective, it is only good based on the volume that is used. Some shipments may benefit from using parcel shipping instead. Shippers wiLl need to look for a way to consolidate parcels into a larger LTL shipment. However, a capacity crunch can limit these options.

Overcoming a Capacity Crunch

The transportation system is extremely complex and because of this a capacity crunch can greatly affect the system in many different ways. Even some areas of transportation that do not often see a major change may feel the effect of the capacity crunch. This causes the entire network to tighten. The only way to overcome a capacity crunch is for all of the transportation services to work together in order to solve the issues that the transportation industry faces.
